About the Port Side

Mission Statement

The Claremont Port Side is dedicated to providing the Claremont Colleges with contextualized, intelligent reports to advance debate among students and citizens. This is a progressive newsmagazine that offers pertinent information and thoughtful analysis on the issues confronting and challenging our world, our country, and our community. Each article in the Claremont Port Side reflects the opinion of its author(s) and does not represent the Claremont Port Side, its editors, its staff, or the Claremont Colleges.

Our History

Founded in 2003 by a Claremont McKenna College student seeking an alternative to the dominating political pedagogy on campus, the Claremont Port Side has provided the Claremont Colleges with contextualized, intelligent reporting.

Since then, however, the political journal’s function in the Claremont community has fundamentally shifted. Though originally a forum for students to express their views on campus, national, and international issues, the Claremont Port Side now serves as a local newsmagazine — covering typically underserved areas within the 5-College community, investigating deeper social and political aspects of student life and administrative actions, and providing local and personal angles to national and international news.
