Gabrielle Giffords to Step Down from Congress

Earlier today, Scripps alumna Gabrielle Giffords ’93 announced her intention to step down from her Congressional seat in the House of Representatives. In a video posted on YouTube, she says, “to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week,” siting her continuing recovery as her primary focus for the time being.

During the last year, the Port Side covered the Giffords shooting, and her ties to Claremont. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, we revealed how it hit home for Tuscon native Isabelle Heilman CMC ’13. We covered the reaction on the Scripps campus when the school began again in January. Last semester, we covered the Gabrielle Giffords ’93 Internship in Public Service program created by Scripps in honor of the congresswoman.

We wish Ms. Giffords all the best on her road to further recovery; she is already doing so much better than anyone could have anticipated a year ago. Her courage and determination are an inspiration to us all.

Emma Brillhart is a sophomore at Scripps majoring in Politics and minoring in French. She is a proud Seattlite and her favorite politician is Representative Jim McDermott.
