Continuing a string of high-profile political figures visiting Claremont McKenna’s campus, Jon Huntsman will be speaking at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum this November.
So when it comes to governing our college, what are CMC students concerned about? When I arrived on campus in fall 2009, upperclassmen were abuzz about two things: the cancellation of Sunday night snack and the possibility that the new Dean of Students threatened our lenient drinking policy.
It is reprehensible that Dean Vos felt the need to manipulate scores upward, but his reasons for doing so might be more complex than we first assume. I hope that this scandal will result in some reflection about the “priorities” that, in part, led to this entire affair.
The O’Melveny & Myers investigation into the SAT scandal revealed that former Vice President of Admission and Financial Aid Richard Vos misreported more than just SAT scores. A look at the additional misreported data reveals the full extent of his deception.
Claremont McKenna would still be number nine on U.S. News & World Report’s list of best liberal arts college in the country had the college submitted correct data.
CMC’s ACT scores, percentage of students who were in the top ten percent of their high school class and admission rate were also falsified, a new report shows. The Port Side discussed the report with President Pamela Gann.
CMC is a community. I couldn’t agree more. But I AM CMC’s message – celebrating the individuals that make up our community – is not what we need to hear in response to recent events.
Free food truck grub? As much as we want? Fitted, soft, and cottony tees? The goal of the food truck rally was to put together some footage of students wearing the “I AM CMC” t-shirts and talking about their favorite things about the College. But was it also in response to the College’s recent bad press?
While we may spend more time on Facebook than interacting with our real-life friends, Chávez’s organizing strategy of face-to-face connection-building is still the most effective way to gather support for a cause.
